'Keep shopping in independent shops'

The National Chairman of the UK's biggest business organisation, the Federation of Small Businesses, visited Wigan to promote the organisation's 'Keep Trade Local' campaign.
The crusade highlights the fact that across the UK, 2,000 local shops are closing each year and John Wright was in Ashton and Pemberton drumming up support.

The All-Party Shops Group of MPs at Westminster has reported that by 2015 there will be no independent retailers in the UK. This amounts to the closure of more than 50,000 businesses.

The average person now travels 893 miles a year to shop for food, which will increase if customers are forced to travel more and more to out of town developments.

The FSB is campaigning to end the practice of selling items at below cost prices and wants to introduce a truly independent regulator to review local planning and to ensure space is allowed for independent small retailers.
