They may not have a big store on the high street, but the arrival of a national veg box scheme is another sign of Wigan's retail renaissance.
Riverford Organic Vegetables has been making its mark all over the country by delivering boxes of freshly-picked, organic fruit and veg direct to the customer's door.

Company spokesman Roger Llewellyn said: "It can be difficult to find good, fresh produce. But you can leave that to us. The vegetables are picked on our farm and delivered straight to you.

"A veg box is a convenient, affordable and enjoyable way to provide a healthy diet for you and your family."

Every box comes with a newsletter, giving updates from the farm and recipe suggestions. Customers can also order milk, eggs, fruit, meat, juice, chocolate, wine and beer.
