WORK will soon start on a new low-rent social housing project.

Wigan Council, Great Places Housing Group and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), have now received planning permission to build 32 properties near St Cuthbert’s Primary School, in Severn Drive, Norley and contractors will begin work in June.

The development will bring back into use vacant council-owned land - comprising the former Robert Lewis Nursery, a car park and waste land - to provide homes for affordable rent to families listed on the council’s housing register.

The build will consist of a mixture of two, three and four-bedroomed houses, and the project is earmarked for completion next spring.

Peter Layland, head of housing at Wigan Council, said: “This project is valuable as we get a lot of nominations for the housing waiting list, so this will provide an extra 32 homes for those people. This is part of our new building programme as the council is looking to build another 72 houses in the borough.”

As part of the scheme, contractors will work with pupils of St Cuthbert’s Primary School to create artwork to brighten up the temporary hoardings and fencing areas around the construction site.

Ward councillor, Jeanette Prescott, said: “It is really great news for the people on Norley and an opportunity to bring an area that has blighted the estate to become a place to be proud of. This will create much needed homes for those people on the housing list fighting over too few properties.

“I do feel the amount of stock we have been able to offer has been low, and with the bedroom tax coming in play in April, this will leave many people in arrears causing vulnerable people already struggling to manage, to lose their homes.”

Coun Chris Ready, Wigan Council’s cabinet portfolio holder for housing, said: “I am really pleased that extra housing is coming to the borough.

“This forms part of additional schemes to source housing across the borough.”
