A WIGAN volunteer has been commended for his dedication to sport within the community.

Alex Winstanley has joined with the UK’s greatest ever Paralympian, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson to promote nominations for the vInspired National Awards after he was nominated for the second year running for an award.

They are the country’s largest celebration of young volunteers and Alex was named a regional winner for the North West in the ‘Bringing Communities Together’ category for his work as a volunteer sports coach and volunteer at the CHAMPS centre, assisting children, including some who had physical and learning disabilities.

He also recently achieved the award for ‘volunteer of the year’ at the Wigan Borough Sports Awards.

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson will be one of the judges for this year’s vInspired National Awards.

The 20-year-old from Whitley said: “It’s been brilliant to see how proud the country is of the Olympic volunteers. It’s opened people’s eyes to how much volunteers can achieve.

“I want to make sure that other young volunteers, who are doing things for Wigan all year round, get the same recognition.”
