Church’s quake relief

A CHURCH group has raised hundreds of pounds to help people affected by the Haiti earthquake.

Representatives of the Christian Churches staged a fund-raising night at the United Reformed Church Hall, in Leigh.

They raised £2,825 at the joint charity evening and with individual church events throughout the year.

Organiser Julia Galloway said: “This should give some hope to Haiti, the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, even before the earthquake.

“Around 80 per cent of the people there earn less than £1.50 daily.

“Despite their problems, the Haitian people are determined to rebuild their lives.

“Very many thanks to the people of Leigh area for being the petrol that drives the engine of the millions of poor, traumatised people of Haiti.

Speaker Andrew Curtis, a voluntary worker from the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development (CAFOD) attended the event.

The earthquake in January claimed more than 250,000 lives and left 300,000 seriously injured. Almost half a million people were left homeless with many malnourished.
