Community wood project is launched
Gin Pit Village Residents Association members during The Big Tree Plant event
VOLUNTEERS braved the mud and winter weather to help plant a green oasis in Astley.
Around 30 people joined Red Rose Forest workers to plant around 2,000 young trees at Gin Pit Village to create a community woodland over the weekend.
The group of hardy planters also included youngsters from the First Astley Scout Group, who donned their wellies and gloves to help plant the new woodland despite the winter chill.
The planting was funded by the Government’s ambitious Big Tree Plant initiative, which aims to plant one million more trees in the UK by 2015 to compensate for those lost over the years to housing and industrial development.
The new woodland adds to fruit trees planted by Red Rose Forest, which has funded the planting schemes with £185,000 of government money, at Gin Pit Village last year.
