Time to have a say on health

GPs are urging people in communities across the borough to get involved in the future of healthcare services in Wigan.

On April 1, GPs will officially take over the running of the multi-million pound health budget for the borough and they want patients to get involved in helping them put this to good use.

The new GP body, the Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group (WBCCG) replaces the old NHS Ashton Leigh Wigan primary care trust and they want people in wards across the borough to get involved in the Patient Partnership Group that they hope to set up at local GP surgeries.

Dr Tim Dalton, local GP and Chair of Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group (WBCCG) said: “We are delighted that from April 1, Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group (WBCCG) will take over from NHS Ashton Leigh and Wigan PCT the statutory duty of commissioning (or buying) services from provider organisations.

“This change will provide local people and their GPs with a larger say in how NHS services are delivered. A good way to get involved is to join a Patient Partnership Group (PPG) at your local GP practice.

“A PPG is a group of patients interested in health and healthcare issues, who want to get involved with and support the running of their local GP Practice.

“Most PPGs also include members of practice staff, and meet at regular intervals to decide ways and means of making a positive contribution to the services and facilities offered by the practice to its patients.

“We hope to develop this network of volunteers so that with time they also influence Borough wide NHS commissioning decisions”.
