A SECONDARY school bade farewell to its record-breaking intake of Year 11 students at a special graduation ceremony.

Bedford High celebrated its best-ever GCSE results, with 86 per cent of pupils achieving five A* to C grades and 56 per cent achieving five including English and maths, with an event in the main hall.

Acting head Jim Killeen told a packed hall of students, staff and parents the students’ achievements in the summer had made it a truly “exceptional year” for the school on Manchester Road.

Mr Killeen said: “This has been a truly remarkable year group. The young people have seen their hard work and commitment pay off with the school’s best ever exam results. We wish them all well as they undoubtedly go on to future success. Clearly they are going to be a tough act to follow.”

The school’s head boy and girl Adam Gillespie and Ashley Hayes were presented with awards for their contribution to school life, while there were also prizes for the school’s achievers of sporting excellence.

Staff and students also used the ceremony to toast the caring, sociable and fun side of school life they have all enjoyed as part of the Bedford “family.”

The audience was treated to a special vocal performance from school leaver and singer Jade Tasker-Marsh, while the prizes were presented by guest of honour and former Salford City Reds and Widnes Vikings rugby league player Cliff Eccles.

Mr Eccles said: “Although you think you are at the end of your education, you are actually just at the beginning. Do not waste the time you have spent at Bedford because what you have learnt here will come to serve you well for the rest of your lives.”

Students were presented with yearbooks and certificates.
