Nostalgia, January 1998 - Lee battled in vain
David Lee
BLOODIED marvel David Lee would not let a nasty head injury prevent him from taking the battle to Bristol City.
Wigan Athletic’s wing ace needed five stitches in the facial wound he suffered in a first-half clash with City’s Rob Edwards.
But after being patched up Lee returned to the fray and played the remainder of the game.
Sadly his gallant efforts were not enough and Latics could not match the comeback powers of their tough-nut wide-man and sank to a 3-0 defeat.
On top of the loss manager John Deehan lost four players because of indiscipline or the treatment room.
Paul Rogers and Graeme Jones picked up yellow cards which earned them a two game suspension apiece while Pat McGibbon and Neil Fitzhenry were both carried off.
WIGAN Warriors asked club chief executive and director David Bradshaw to resign.
Mr Bradshaw has not been to the club for two months due to illness and had previously offered to step down following Phil Clarke’s recruitment.
Central Park bosses met Mr Bradshaw to discuss the move that would see Clarke become chief executive while Mike Colling, a chartered account already involved in the club’s financial affairs, was appointed to the board as financial director.
He was the last of four directors who oversaw the sale of Central Park to the supermarket giant Tesco for £12million.
Clarke would make up a quarter of a new four-man board which would sit alongside chairman Mike Nolan and John Martin.
The announcement came just days after Great Britain coach Andy Goodway was named as head coach John Monie’s right hand man.
