Nostalgia, January 1998 - Never Ever tops charts
Melanie Blatt of All Saints
A COVER version of a song written by the legendary rock star Lou Reed re-surfaced at the top of the UK singles chart.
Unusually the version began life as the soundtrack to a BBC film aimed at advertising the corporation’s products, and which finished with a thank you to licence fee payers.
Featuring a host of international musical talent, including Reed himself, there was public clamour for the song to be released as a single.
It reached number one twice, on its release in October 1997 and then again in January of this year.
Replacing Perfect Day as the UK’s number one was the second single from the all-girl group All Saints.
Considered a sort-of anti-Spice Girls, the band was made up of founding members Melanie Blatt and Shaznay Lewis, plus sisters Nicole and Natalie Appleton.
Never Ever sold more than 1.25m copies in the UK alone and was the first of five number one singles for the quartet.
But after just a week All Saints found themselves slipping down the charts thanks to Nicole Appleton’s future husband’s band.
At the time Appleton and Liam Gallagher may have seemed an unlikely couple, but they have been together for a decade and have a son, Gene.
Back in 1998 they were competitors for the number one spot, Oasis snatching the crown from All Saints’ heads with their 9min 38s epic All Around the World.
