Nostalgia, January 1998 - The Borrowers a hit
John Goodman in The Borrowers
THE Borrowers, adopted from Mary Norton’s novel of the same name, featured an all star cast including John Goodman and Jim Broadbent, and proved a hit with critics and audiences alike.
It tells the tale of a family of little people who live in the nooks and crannies of a normal human house, ‘borrowing’ food and other bits and pieces for their own means.
Such was the success of the film that it even wowed the upper echelons of the movie fraternity, gaining a nomination for Best British Film at the 1998 BAFTAs, although it lost out to Gary Oldman’s semi-autobiographical directorial debut Nil By Mouth.
Meanwhile, A family comedy starring a daft Tarzan-like character was also showing at Wigan’s Virgin Cinema.
Starring the rubber-faced American actor Brendan Fraser, George of the Jungle borrows heavily from Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale of a young boy raised in the wild by animals.
Based on the cartoon series of the same name, the story sees the innocent yet tough and jungle-savvy George romance and fall in love with a wealthy American woman played by Leslie Mann.
Thomas Hayden Church is her jealous and bad-tempered husband, while two poachers (Gregg Cruttwell and Abraham Benrubi) provide the additional bad guys who are out to capture George’s animal friends.
