Nostalgia, June 2000 - Sonique hits mainstream
Sonique
DANCE music topped the charts as an often underground genre enjoyed a summer in the sun.
As the much-feted party island of Ibiza enjoyed yet another resurgence a big name from the DJing world scored a number one hit, as did a soul legend in an indirect way.
Sonique originally found fame providing vocals for the dance act S’Express, themselves one time chart toppers.
But she found fame in her own right with the smash hit It Feels So Good, the song spending three weeks at the top of the UK singles chart.
Having begun her music career as a DJ, including a stint as resident at the world famous Manumission night at Ibiza’s Privilege night club, Sonique eventually crossed over into the mainstream.
Following up on the popularity of It Feels So Good her hit album Hear My Cry reached number six in the albums chart. Sonique went on to bag the Best British Female Artist gong at the 2001 Brit Awards.
Replacing her at the top of the singles chart were the Italian DJs and producers Enrico Ferrari and Ciro Sasso, backed up by the British singer Elroy Spoonface Powell. Together they became Black Legend.
Using a sample of Powell singing Barry White’s You See the Trouble With Me karaoke-style, the pair created a dance-floor monster that broke out to run riot in the pop charts.
