Cup run comes to halt at Everton (Feb 1980)
They almost took an early and unexpected lead - but Latics had to settle for the respect of their First Division opponents, and the adoration of their fans, as Everton brought Wigan's glorious cup run to a raucous end at Goodison Park.
In front of a capacity crowd of 51, 863 – 20,000 of them cheering on the Blues of Wigan – Latics' players showed grit and determination in the face of the English football giants.
Agonisingly Derek Brownbill had almost given the visitors an early lead, but failed to convert Peter Houghton's cross.
Instead Joe McBride put the Toffees ahead in the 30th minute, just as Latics' nerves were finally settling.
Fourth Division Latics refused to give up and continued to press and harry their opponents.
They even began to enjoy themselves as the carnival atmosphere of an FA Cup Fourth Round tie got to them.
Despite all their endeavour, Latics could not quite find the goal to turn a dream day out into a fairytale.
Instead it was the class of their top-flight opponents that shone through.
Having scored one, McBride provided Everton's second, Bob Latchford heading home his cross.
Then Brian Kidd struck a thunderbolt past Brown to make it 3-0.
