Carnival is a great idea as long as it's free
What a good idea: "Party nights" for Wigan town centre (WEP, June 16).
I agree totally with what Mr Callaghan says.
I drive taxis on weekend evenings and have lost count of older customers who say they are not coming into Wigan anymore because they feel old at 25!
Regarding Boxing Day, I have my own thoughts on it. To me it originally began with charity collectors in fancy dress and eventually everybody else followed suit and joined in and it gradually built up into what it is now - unique!
It's specific to Wigan, no other towns do it, many other towns are dead on Boxing Day.
However, I do believe it is not as busy as it once was, it is going downhill because of the sheer greed of pubs/ clubs but mainly clubs who are charging 20 and more for admission.
They have jumped on the bandwagon big style and everyone comes away complaining. Not good is it?
These pubs/clubs are biting the hands that feed them and there'll be
repercussions.
Back to the carnival idea, in my opinion I think it should be stressed at the outset that there should be NO admission charges whatsoever at clubs/pubs or otherwise they'll have a field day charging for entrance or facilities and the whole thing will be ruined before it's started.
Let's make sure it's run the right way from the beginning and I'm sure it will be a winner and go from strength to strength.

BNP fight must be smart and sensible
On the subject of BNP support, reporting and debate in the media seems either nonsense or childish.
Politicians are not addressing certain questions which arise, in an intelligent way.
For example, why is the promotion of Christianity, as the BNP purports to do, any different to the promotion of Islam?
Or why can the English people not have a parliament, as Wales and
Scotland have?
As a result of not addressing them, they are helping the BNP. Mrs
Spellman (Conservative) stated on Question Time that many people
voting BNP did not understand their policies!
A serious question: What is a fascist? If it is someone who wants to rule the lives of others completely, so did communists, and so do New Labour.
I am sure there are reasons for people to oppose the BNP, but they need to be articulated intelligently.
The alternative is more growth in BNP support by voters tired of the
destruction of all things English and Christian.

Creational science largely rejected
John Utton's recent letter (June 1) contained a rare (thankfully) blend of religious bigotry and scientific ignorance.
Just to deal with one of his points: "Molecular biologists have disproved evolution."
In 2005, there was a court case in USA (Tammy Kitzmiller v Dover Area School District) which was a challenge brought against a public school district that required the presentation of "intelligent design" as an alternative to evolution.
Micheal Behe was called as a primary witness for the defence. The judge found against the school board and their attempt to have 'creational
science' taught. He specifically commented on Michael Behe's work as "fringe science which has achieved no acceptance in the scientific community".
