Wigan's Jenny Meadows struggled to hide her disappointment after failing to reach the 800m final during her maiden Olympics in Beijing.
The 27-year-old has endured a difficult year after her father, Keith, died of cancer 10 weeks ago and she dedicated Friday's success in the opening round to his memory.

But she couldn't repeat the trick in the semi finals 24 hours later as the World Indoor Championship finalist could only finish sixth in a time of 1.59.53 minutes.

Meadows' time was just shy of her personal best but almost a second and a half slower than Jamaican Kenia Sinclair, who qualified for the final in eighth place.
"I didn't think I was going to get to the final," she said. "It is one of those things if I had run the race of my life it was possible.

"It wasn't nerves, it wasn't emotion – I just did not get it together in the race unfortunately.
"The race just did not flow for me, it was fast, slow and did not pick up which prevented me from running a 1.58. On the back straight my head was telling me go with the move it was just my body didn't respond.

"I did run to my game plan it was just my body did want to give me what my game plan and mind were telling them.
"I have put a lot of work in over the last year and have not got the prize that warrants the effort I have put in. Knowing me I will go back in the winter and train even harder."

After qualifying third fastest from her heat, Meadows found herself in a tough semi-final containing the likes of world number one Pamela Jelimo.

But the Wigan and District runner seemed well placed after the first lap before Jelimo led a break which Meadows couldn't keep pace with.
The race though was not without its controversy for Meadows.
After some jostling in the middle of the pack at the 400m mark, Bulgarian Sviatlana Usovich was sent flying.

And despite being small in stature at 5ft 1in and seven stone, Meadows insists she is prepared to give as good as she gets against the sport's big guns. She added: "After 400m I got a good knock and I gave a good knock back to Usovich.

"Usovich came quite close to me and I gave an elbow to hold my ground. I heard the crowd boo and I thought oh gosh what happened.
"I saw someone go off and I thought I hope that wasn't because of me.
"I am normally the one who gets bashed around because I am so small. In 800m running is all about holding your own ground and I think I am learning the tactics quite well."

Meadows could still be drafted into the 400m relay squad this week, but it is unlikely.
