Steve Bruce has thrown a protective arm around Titus Bramble and Lee
Cattermole following Latics' 1-1 draw with Sunderland.
The Wigan boss saw Bramble head an own goal to give the Black Cats an early lead, while Cattermole was sent-off late in the game for a second booking.
But he refused to be over-critical of the pair after Latics battled back to earn a point through Amr Zaki's 78th-minute equaliser.
Bruce said: "Titus has had his fair share of mistakes and when he makes one, it tends to get punished.
"His header could have hit the post or the keeper saved it, but instead it went into the net.
"Something like that you can forgive because he went to try to clear the ball and it just came off the top of his head.
"We've all done it – I scored many own goals in my time. The main thing was Titus didn't let it affect him.
"After that I thought he was excellent, and that is why I've kept with him.
"He played really well in the previous three games against Chelsea, Notts County and Hull, and he'll be okay after this.
"It's a case of how you manage players in such circumstances.
"Sometimes Titus needs the stick, sometimes he needs an arm around the shoulders, and sometimes you need a little bit of time away from him."
Cattermole will miss Sunday's trip to Tottenham after his 85th-minute red card after a foul on Teemu Tainio.
He'd already been cautioned in the second half for dumping Djibril Cisse on the floor with a robust challenge.
Bruce said: "We all know the rules. If you go to ground, you are putting yourself at risk.
