Bruce hits back at McLeish

Steve Bruce has hit back at Alex McLeish's claims that Birmingham have improved since he quit.
And Bruce says the circumstances surrounding his surprise decision to leave Blues for Wigan in November, have spurred him on to become an even better manager.

While Wigan have taken 32 points from Bruce's 23 games in charge, moving from 19th to 13th in the league, Birmingham have plummeted from 15th to 19th under former Scotland boss McLeish.
Birmingham will be relegated this weekend at home to Blackburn unless they win and both Reading and Fulham fail to get three points away at
Derby and Portsmouth respectively, while Wigan are safe.

But McLeish has said that Birmingham are in better shape under him.
McLeish's claims have annoyed Bruce, who cannot believe the club are in the drop zone. He insists he left them in rude health.
And Bruce fears McLeish is in danger of blowing his promising legacy.
"I know for a fact that they've got a really good young team," said Bruce.

"Sir Alex Ferguson, when we lost narrowly 1-0 at home to Manchester United last September, said arguably that's the best team you've had in six years so I take no satisfaction out of seeing Birmingham in trouble.
"I had six wonderful years there – the supporters were great and for the players I took there, I don't want to see them being relegated.

"My last game at Birmingham we were going into the Villa game 12th in the league and we lost in the last minute 2-1.
"I saw the Birmingham team the other day. Six or seven were playing, six or seven weren't playing and maybe if they had been, they might be in a different position – but then he's a better manager than me!

"I was bitterly disappointed and upset at what went on," added former Old Trafford centre-back Bruce.
"I don't think that needed to be said and it did upset me. But the one thing when I do get upset is that I usually come back roaring.

"The whole thing of leaving galvanised me to say, 'Well here's a
challenge' – I am delighted for my chairman at Wigan, who obviously badly wanted me enough to pay £3m, so I wanted to repay his faith and show that I was a decent manager after some of the comments when I left.

"Sometimes familiarity does breed contempt and you can overstay your
welcome.
"Everybody associates me with Manchester United and success.
"But the one thing I'm not frightened to do is roll my sleeves up and have a go and that's the way I approach management.

"I haven't really won much apart from a couple of promotions.
"But taking Birmingham to 13th, 10th and 12th-place finishes in the
Premier League is a decent achievement."
