Bruce pays tribute to players

Steve Bruce has paid tribute to his Latics players after they rounded off the season with yesterday's battling performance against champions Manchester United.
Although United won 2-0 at the JJB Stadium to claim a 10th Premier League title, the Wigan boss was delighted with his side's attitude.
Now he is planning a busy summer to try to ensure there will be no
repeat of this term's long fight against relegation.
Latics finished 14th, a considerable achievement considering they were
second from bottom when Bruce arrived at the end of November.
A first-half Cristiano Ronaldo penalty and Ryan Giggs' late strike gave
United their victory in front of a stadium record 25,133 attendance.
But Latics pushed them all the way, much to the pride of Bruce.
He said: "We've been on a good run lately and I'd been telling people before the game that United would have to battle like hell to beat us.
"That proved the case. We had the bit between our teeth and the lads enjoyed themselves out there.
"The bottom line is I have some very good players here who have turned in some great performances over recent months.
"I thought Wilson Palacios was absolutely outstanding once again, and
Maynor Figueroa – who came in at left-back against Ronaldo – was terrific."
Bruce was unhappy with some of the decisions from referee Steve Bennett.
He felt Paul Scholes should have been sent off in the first half for a block on Palacios, having already been booked for a foul on the Honduran.
The decision to award United their penalty for Emmerson Boyce's challenge on Wayne Rooney also angered him, as did Mr Bennett's failure not to give a spot-kick to Latics when a Jason Koumas shot struck Rio Ferdinand on the top of his arm.
Bruce said: "I've got to say I'm glad there wasn't much riding on it from our point of view because three big decisions went against us.
"I don't begrudge Manchester United winning the league – that is for sure.
"But they had some key decisions which went their way, that helped their cause, I thought.
"Paul Scholes will go down as one of United's greats – everything about him is top-drawer.
"He knows he got away with it. Had it been any other day, it was another yellow card and he'd have been off.
"You should ask the referee about his integrity, not about my team's.
"I have to say there were three unbelievable decisions in the first half.
"You would have thought Rio Ferdinand had gloves on and to say the penalty we conceded was harsh is an understatement."
Bruce led his players on a lap of honour after the final whistle, before they formed a guard of honour to applaud United on to the pitch to collect the trophy.
The squad are now on holiday until early July – albeit with a strict fitness programmes – but Bruce was back in the office today working on his retained list and looking to strengthen the squad for next season.
