Wigan Athletic will fight tooth and nail to keep hold of Lee Cattermole despite renewed interest from Sunderland.
The Black Cats looked to have been scared off the scent after seeing an initial offer turned down flat by Roberto Martinez.
And they appeared to have signalled defeat in their efforts to land the 21-year-old Teessider when they paid Marseille £5m for Albanian captain Lorik Cana late last week .

However, Bruce admitted over the weekend that he had 'not given up hope' of signing Cattermole for the second time in 12 months, having brought him to the JJB from Middlesbrough last summer.

Where will Latics finish at the end of the season? Cast your vote (scroll down, right-hand column) ...
And the rumour mill claimed Sunderland were prepared to go as high as £10m for the player who cost only £3.5m a year ago.
Chairman Dave Whelan, though, insists the situation has not changed – and Cattermole will be staying with Wigan.

Whelan told the Evening Post: "Sunderland are wasting their time – and I've told them that. I said, 'Don't even bother bidding for him again'. Lee will be at Wigan this season.

"When I heard about the first bid from Sunderland, I said straight away to John Benson, 'He isn't going anywhere. He's staying here'.
"And Roberto agrees with me, so that's it. Finished."

The waters have been further muddied by the presence of
Liverpool and Arsenal in the background, with both Rafa Benitez and Arsene Wenger believed to be monitoring developments.

The Reds could be planning for life without either Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano.

And Arsenal lack a combative figure like Cattermole in the centre of the park, and Wenger has cash to spend after the £25m sale of Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City.

However, Whelan insists the player is focused on propelling Latics towards an historic European finish, and says he cannot wait to team up with the club's new manager.

"Lee wants to stay," Whelan added. "He's happy here, he knows he's making progress here, and he wants to play under Roberto. It's out of the way as far as he's concerned."

Jason Scotland will follow in the footsteps of assistant boss Graeme Jones in wearing the Latics No.9 shirt next season.

Scotland will inherit the shirt worn by Emile Heskey and Mido last term after Latics released their squad numbers for the 2009-2010 season.
Hendry Thomas has been handed the No.6 shirt previously worn by Antoine Sibierski, while Jordi Gomez and James McCarthy will wear Nos.15 and 24 respectively.

There are no other changes from last season, with youngsters Jon Routledge (38), Joe Holt (40) and Callum McManaman (43) ready for their first campaign at first-team level.

But Scotland has refused to put himself under any undue pressure by setting himself any targets ahead of his first season in the top flight. The Trinidad and Tobago international said: "I don't ever set myself targets.

"I just try to get my head down, work hard, get down to it and do my best for the team."

Report him to the premier league. Continuing interest in a player after a club has said no twice could be considered tapping up. Stop it Brucie bonus.

Why on earth would Cat want to go to Sunderland, its not as though he is going to better himself by going there. Plus what happened to the comment Bruce said when he bought him to Wigan from Middlesborough.
Quote... Its the best thing that could happen to Lee leaving the North East?
If Wigan allow their best player by a mile to leave, then they will deserve everything they get.
Its imperative they keep hold of Lee, build the team and kick on for a top 6 spot this season.

The quote 'best thing could happen to Lee leaving the North East' refers to boro as they are an awful team. luk wot hapend to them. also he wud come 2 sunderland becos wigan shudnt even b a football team. with the lowest average fans in the league of just over 18000 they are an absolute joke.also boro had terrible fans. so comin 2 sunderland he wud actually experience a propa team n crowd n not sum town where they prefer rugby. and as for 'builda team and kick on for a top 6 spot' are you off ur head? with valencia gone and maybe cattermole u will be lucky to stay up

Balmer,

With illiterate idiots like you as a supporter - who would even consider going to Sunderland. Once Brucie Bonus has spent all your cash and produced nothing, his teams are big on defence but rubbish on attack and that is no recipe for success.

Balmer..... This coming from a "supporter" of a team that only stayed up by the skin of its teeth last season.
You lot will be playing the likes of Newcastle, Boro and Darlington after next season in the lower divisions.
Lets just see what November the 28th brings when you get yours Ar$es kicked at the DW Stadium.
I would sooner be in a crowd of 18,000 as you say watching Wigan than in a crowd of 100,000 watching that bag of c£ap you lot watch.

haha. if u r all using words such as "illiterate little man", "tripe" "talentless thug" you are all obviously a bunch of freaks. wigan shudn't even be considered a town. i grew up in sunderland and I know its a s**t hole but Wigan I can't even imagine. as for its pathetic football team and supporters, its almost as funny as newcastle. last season we were a joke, ill admit that - but lets not dwell on the past. we have been in the premiership many more years and put wigans history to shame if we talk bout d past. the highest you have finished is 10th?! but now its a new season. bruce didnt have to think twice bout leavin the football club(can i even call it a football club?).he decided to come to a real team with real supporters and an actual pitch - not some s**t rugby field. i completely forgot dat u probs hav d worst pitch in top two leagues aswell. so many reasons! im sure once bruce talks to cattermole he will come to his senses.if i lived in wigan i too wud rather watch rugby than watch the worst defender in the premiership(titus bramble) for the least popular team.

oh and RICE, you dont hav a clue what you are talking bout - 100000 fans? no team gets dat knobhed. darlington are in league two so we cannot possibly play them next season. and 28th november? dat will b a chance to play some of our youngsters.

wigan haha wot a joke
