Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed the remarkable job performed by Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce.
Fergie picked up his 19th piece of silverware at the JJB Stadium on Sunday.
Bruce has enjoyed his own six months of glory – leading Latics up to 14th in the Premier League and pulling the club clear of relegation.
His old boss Ferguson said: "He's done a great job, fantastic.
"He's got Wigan playing the right way and they deserve to stay up.
"I think the point Wigan got at Chelsea helped us win the league.
"It was a tough one all right for us. For most of the game we played well, but there were some nervous moments."
Bruce has revealed he hopes to manage Manchester United one day.
The former Old Trafford defender played for nine years at the Theatre of Dreams under Ferguson.
United legends Mark Hughes and Roy Keane have also been mentioned as possible candidates to take the throne when Fergie eventually calls it a day.
Bruce said: "Whether you're playing or managing you want to get to the top of your profession.
"You're always striving to be good and if you're going to do this job then why not set your aspirations to go to the very top.
"If I can, or if I get the opportunity then who knows?
"Eight months ago I would have been lucky to have got the Scunthorpe job!"
But Bruce will have to wait a while for any vacancy at Old Trafford.
Ferguson won't be leaving his throne in the near future, even if he lands the Champions League trophy – because of his wife Cath.
He said: "Retire? My wife throws me out of the house everyday at 7am! It's a definite no."
Meanwhile, Bruce is closing in on his first summer signings – and
believes last Sunday's battle against champions Manchester United at the JJB will help him land some top talent.
The Wigan manager wants to bring in a new goalkeeper, centre-back, midfielder and striker ahead of the new season.
Bruce said: "When we've got a DVD in our pocket of us taking on Man United in a full house it's certainly going to help attract players here."
He is targeting two players at his old club Birmingham – and holds all the aces after they were relegated last Sunday.
Tunisian midfielder Mehdi Nafti, 29, is out of contract with the Blues, but has the option of another year.
Bruce signed him in 2005 from Racing Santander and would be able to snap him up on a free, with Aussie midfielder Josip Skoko ready to leave Wigan.
Winger Sebastian Larsson was also taken to St Andrews by Bruce 18 months ago. Birmingham want to offer him a new deal, but Bruce may swoop if Antonio Valencia decides to leave.
Bruce was recently in Cairo to open preliminary talks with Egypt striker Amr Zaki.
His assistant Eric Black went to watch Hamburg striker Jose Paolo Guerrero last week.
Latics have also been running the rule over Greek centre-half Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who plays for AEK Athens, and Charlton centre-back Madjid Bougherra.
A third choice keeper is on Bruce's list of priorities with Carlo Nash, on loan at Stoke, wanting to sign a permanent deal with the Potters.
Meanwhile, Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell wants to sign David Cotterill on a permanent contract.
