Henri Camara hopes his two goals in the Carling Cup can open the door to a Premier League return with Latics.
The Senegal striker's goals against Notts County were his first two at club level since December 2006, and he's delighted to end that barren run.
Camara is set to return to the bench for Saturday's trip to Hull City as Amr Zaki and Emile Heskey remain Steve Bruce's likely forward line.
But he's ready to answer the call during the KC Stadium clash if Latics are in need of a breakthrough.
Camara said: "It was great to score again. It gave me a lot of confidence and I hope I get the chance to prove myself back at league level now.
"I was pleased with my overall game and that we got through.
"Those sort of games could be important for me to keep knocking on the door."
Camara, 31, is Latics' highest Premier League scorer, netting 18 top-flight goals.
Twelve came in his first season, and six the next, before he was loaned out to West Ham for the majority of last term – a far from happy time for him.
Now he's back in the frame at the JJB Stadium and thinks he has a point to prove.
Camara said: "I realise I must be patient this season but I really do feel I've come in from the cold a bit at the club.
"I was very touched to receive the ovation I did from the
supporters when I came on as a substitute against Chelsea.
"It shows they hadn't forgotten me, and I know in my heart that if I stay fit and keep showing the right attitude, I will get chances this season.
"That's all I ever wanted and I feel the manager has the belief in me to make a contribution.
"It was great to score in the Carling Cup, but I'd love to be able to add to my tally in the Premier League.
"When you play at this level, you need proper competition for places and we've got that.
"We have very different types of strikers, and that gives the manager options.
"I really hope I can help the club again and show I still have the hunger to score goals for Wigan."
