Wigan produced the ideal response to last week's 9-1 thrashing by Tottenham as Hugo Rodallega's solitary goal was enough to secure a 1-0 win over Sunderland.
Former Latics boss Steve Bruce's return to the DW Stadium was an unhappy one as the striker he signed 10 months ago inflicted a fifth away defeat of the campaign.

The Black Cats barely threatened throughout and after Wigan's Jason Scotland hit the post in the first half Rodallega's sixth Barclays Premier League goal of the season decided the contest.

Maynor Figueroa returning in place of Erik Edman was the only change as Wigan Athletic faced Sunderland at the DW Stadium

Figueroa had missed the previous three matches with a knee injury, with Latics conceding 14 goals during his absence.

Elsewhere, Roberto Martinez kept faith with the team that were hammered at Tottenham last weekend, with James McCarthy added to the bench.

Darren Bent was passed fit for Sunderland, managed by Steve Bruce, although former Latic Lee Cattermole missed out through injury.

Latics: Kirkland; Melchiot, Bramble, Boyce, Figueroa; N'Zogbia, Diame, Scharner, Thomas, Rodallega; Scotland. Subs: Pollitt, Cho, Amaya, Gomez, Koumas, Sinclair, McCarthy.

Sunderland: Fulop; Bardsley, Da Silva, Turner, McCartney; Malbranque, Cana, Henderson, Richardson, Reid; Bent. Subs: Carson, Ferdinand, Mensah, Nosworthy, Zenden, Healy, Campbell.

A well deserved win over Sunderland. How NZogbia didn't win the man of the match God only knows, he was outstanding. Well done lads!

well done to latics. it must be the most sweet satisfaction beating sunderland after the way steve bruce has treated wigan twice. im not a latics supporte but i am a football supporter and hate the way coaches like bruce and rednap return to clubs for a job they know isnt in their hearts
sweet revenge i think

A guttsy performance by the lads this afternoon, and i agree with u blue wigan charles was all over the pitch hunting for the ball. had clenched cheeks when they got the stretcher out for hugo though! as for gormless gomez please go back to swansea and take scotland with you, i'd put stripey up front before those two.

Still can't see the brilliant signings of Martinez performing i.e Scotland and Gomez. You can win a game here and there with this kind of performance but not many.Mr Whelan will have to trade half of the squad in january.

Haron i dissagree with you, if we got rid of scotland gomez i think we need 3 possibly 4 new signings, we deffinately need 1 possibly 2 strikers. but most importantly we need a lee catamole type player in mid field, and a right back. and i think we could manage a top 10 finnish. but if martinez thinks by bringing on gormless gomez will change the game in our favour hell will freeze over first. the swap on saturday should have been scotland off for sinclair and with him on right wing charles on left and hugo upfront would pay good money to see 90 mins of that
