Second-half goals from Lee Cattermole, Olivier Kapo, Paul Scharner and Henri Camara gave Wigan Athletic victory at Ipswich on Wednesday night.
For Cattermole and Kapo, it was their first goals in Latics colours, while Scharner's strike was his first of the campaign.
Camara added a fourth in injury time, this third in the competition this term.
Cattermole opened the scoring in the 51st minute, side footing home from inside the six-yard box after Wilson Palacios' free-kick had been pushed out by Richard Wright.
It was a lead Chris Kirkland kept in tact four minutes later, diving to parry away a well struck free-kick from Tommy Miller.
But the Latics goalkeeper was helpless to prevent Ipswich equalising in the 61st minute.
Tommy Miller saw a centre cut out by the visitors defence, the ball falling to Alan Quinn on the left side of the box.
His cross picked out Jonathan Walters at the far post who volleyed home right-footed from eight yards.
Latics were back in front four minutes later though, Kevin Kilbane's deep cross headed back into the middle by Emile Heskey.
Amr Zaki swung and missed, but Kapo made no mistake, hammering home a low shot from 12 yards past Wright.
It was 3-1 in the 70th minute, Scharner touching home Zaki's powerful downward header from an Antonio Valencia corner.
And two minutes into stoppage time, Camara flicked a header over Wright from close range.
In the first half, Latics' goal had led a charmed life, Steve Bruce's side fortunate not to be behind at half-time to their Championship hosts.
That said, Zaki had come closest to breaking the deadlock in stoppage-time with a free-kick which hit the bar.
But Ipswich will point to two headers which were cleared off the line within a matter of seconds of each other.
Kirkland was busy inside the first five minutes, diving at the foot of his near post to spoon a skidding shot from winger David Norris behind.
At the other end, Heskey let fly with a first time shot after the ball broke to him just inside the box,Wright diving to help it past the post.
Then a strong run down the right-wing from Valencia was met by Zaki, but he didn't make the best of connections and his header looped straight into Wright's gloves.
Latics had four major let-offs in the space of two minutes, Ipswich coming so close to breaking the deadlock.
First, Norris blazed over from six yards after flicking the ball round Bramble, leaving himself with only Kirkland to beat.
Kirkland then finger-tipped a curling shot from Miller past the far post, and the resulting corner caused chaos in the Latics box.
Alex Bruce met Quinn's corner with a close range header which Cattermole blocked on the line, and when the ball came over again, this time it was Bramble on the line stopping Ivan Campo's header going in.
The hosts maintained their pressure, Miller seeing a low shot curl inches wide of Kirkland's far post in the 36th minute.
Latics' response saw Heskey try his luck with a low shot from a tight angle on the right side of the box which Wright got a glove to.
Bruce made only three changes to the side which started against Tottenham on Sunday, having widely been anticipated to have rotated his squad.
But the Wigan boss was clearly looking to make progress in the competition, one which Latics reached the final in three years ago.
Cattermole returned after suspension, while Kapo and Kilbane were given the nod after being substitutes at Spurs.
Mario Melchiot, Jason Koumas and Maynor Figueroa were the three to make way, Koumas and Figueroa named on the bench.
Melchiot's place at right-back was taken by Emmerson Boyce who moved across from centre-half, Kilbane starting at left-back.
Scharner moved from midfield into the defence alongside Bramble who was named skipper for the night against his former club.
Cattermole resumed his central midfield partnership with Palacios, the pair flanked by Valencia on the right and Kapo on the left.
