Wigan held their nerve to secure a 2-1 home win over Manchester City. Steve Bruce's men took their unbeaten run to six games – including four in the league – with a spirited display at the JJB Stadium.
All three goals were scored in the opening half. Efforts from Antonio Valencia and Amr Zaki sandwiched a Vincent Kompany goal in an eventful opening half.

Valencia got the ball rolling for Latics in the 16th minute with a brilliant strike from outside the box.

City replied two minutes later when Kompany poked the ball home from a freekick, after Maynor Figueroa had missed the clearance.

But Zaki ensured the home side were in control at half-time with his fifth goal of the Premier League season – albeit in controversial circumstances.

Wilson Palacios tumbled in the box after the slightest of touches from Javier Garrido, and Egyptian Zaki stepped up to coolly take the penalty.

Chances were few and far between in the second half that, as a spectacle, never matched the first.

Wigan worked hard to disrupt City, who only had two real goal-scoring opportunities in the second-half.

Chris Kirkland denied Elano with a stunning save on the hour and then, in the 74th minute, Titus Bramble cleared the ball after a messy effort by substitute Ched Evans.

Tempered flared throughout the second-half but Latics hung on to claim all three points.

Wigan: Kirkland, Melchiot, Boyce, Bramble, Figueroa, Valencia, Cattermole, Palacios, Kapo, Zaki, Heskey. Subs: Pollitt, Scharner, Brown, de Ridder, Kilbane, Koumas, Camara.

Man City: Hart, Zabalete, Dunne, Richards, Garrido, Ireland, Kompany, Blumer, Wright-Phillips, Silva, Robinho.

you can win one or two games by disrupting the opponent.
Soon,Wigan will have to show some creative and exciting football rather than "controled" one.
Sorry to say, although we got the 3 points the game was very boring and uninspiring.

Cheers,

Harens

Its tough on Bennett, it is one of those decisions that can go either way, when your on the field or at the match its 50/50. Was mrlowe at the match? He's very opinionated on all pages he posts on. It makes a change anyway for us to get rub of the green. The game was probably the best I have seen for a good while, as for 50+ million in striker, I hope they were sale or return!

To misterlowe and andrewj_wilson:Thanks for bringinging the Issue of Mr Bennett.I am sure that you are not aware of the following:
A year ago,Birmingham fc under Steve Bruce played Aston Villa and Daniel De Ridder who played very good at that game was "sandwiched"between Barry and Olson(the Captain of Villa),De Ridder fell in the penalty area for sure but Mr Bennett thought that he dived and
yellow carded him.Bruce, rightfully so, was infuriated after the game and criticized Bennett.I suppose that Mr Bennett did not want anything of the same from Bruce and decided the way he did.

I could see from my seat in the east stand it was a clear penalty, and infact just got home intime to hear Andy gray say "there doesnt have to be contact! but intent!" and as the fullback was clearly out of position and peddling fast to get back, wilson won the ball with his first touch then the fullback stood on wilsons right foot, and has for boreing? how is it i was up and down from my seat all match with the near misses of Zaki??

It was a fabulous win, make no mistake about it. Valencia's strike was stunning, as simple as that. The penalty, well what I will say is look at Garrido's reaction. He didn't argue or strop. He knows he's made contact, albeit minimal, with Palacios and Wilson has made an exaggerated fall, but it's a penalty simple as that...

Misterlowe. Thanks for your comments. Jog onto the Warriors pages there's a good lad

It was worth getting up at 4am for Valencias goal, Not for the defending on the city goal though. well done at keeping the Creative city midfield quiet, (doesn't that stephen ireland looks like a leprechaun)
The penalty was a no brainer, the defender intentionally crossed the path of the attacker in the box and although the contact was minimal it was a foul. Concerns that the straight ball was causing so much trouble. Zaki looks a good un!

Latics Dave, Misterlowe knows more about latics and soccer than you and i put together. not bad for a soccer hater!!!!

NZ Wiganite, please dont flatter mrlowe, he clearly thinks he knows about latics and is extremely opinionmated, but replays show there was contact, yes a theatrical dive went with it but the important point, there was contact. As for the city cry for a penalty, there was a tangle of legs, no intent, it gets Dunne back for his constant fouling on Zaki anyway.
