Steve Bruce has been left frustrated after long-term target John Mensah decided to join Lyon.
The Latics boss aimed to smash the club's transfer record by persuading the Ghana captain to move to the JJB from Rennes.
But the centre-back has signed a five-year contract with the French champions in a deal worth £6.6m.

Bruce wanted to add the defender alongside Paul Scharner, Emmerson Boyce and Titus Bramble after Andreas Granqvist joined Dutch side Groningen.

Mensah played alongside Wigan defenders Mario Melchiot and Erik Edman at Rennes for a season and had been recommended to Bruce.

Mensah, 25, said: "I had some solicitations, including from English clubs such as Wigan and Portsmouth, but I opted for Lyon because my agent insisted."
