Paul Scharner is relishing Sunday's battle with
Manchester United.
Latics' player of the year can expect to have his hands full trying to keep Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez in check as United go all guns blazing for the title.
But that doesn't worry the madcap Austrian, who has never been a player to shirk a challenge and believes Wigan can spring a surprise.
Scharner told the Evening Post: "Hopefully we can finish the
season well on Sunday. I'm looking forward to that one.
"This is the first time I've played in defence against Manchester United – in the past it has always been in midfield.
"In some ways it should be a bit easier to be involved in the game playing in defence rather than midfield.
"You don't see much of the ball when United have it in midfield – you find yourself left in no-man's land.
"We will certainly try to beat them. The season isn't over yet, and it will be much easier to have a party after a good result.
"Recently we have started to pick up results against the big clubs and it would be nice to continue doing that.
"We've done better because Steve Bruce has brought a new belief to the club.
"We now think we can take points whoever we play.
"It's always a pleasure to play against players of the quality United have got and we have got to try to keep them quiet."
Fans voted Scharner their player of the year after a series of strong performances in the centre of defence over the second half of the season.
He has also weighed in with five goals, making him joint-second highest scorer with Antoine Sibierski – Marcus Bent tops the chart with seven.
Latics will be hoping the 28-year-old is still around next season as negotiations over a new contract having just started.
Scharner said: "Hopefully we can get back round the table after the United game and speak about the future again.
"I still have a year left on my contract, so I have time and I would like to stay at Wigan. Let's see what the future brings.
"It was very nice to win the player of the year award.
"It was a surprise, and it's always a big boost for any player to get an award like that."
Meanwhile, Bruce was back in Wigan yesterday overseeing Latics' preparations for the United game following his three-day trip to Egypt to run the rule over summer transfer target Amr Zaki.
He held talks with the striker's club, El Zamalek, and while certain terms were agreed, a transfer fee wasn't.
Latics general manager John Benson will fly to Cairo later in the month after Zamalek have played in the Egyptian cup final, to
continue negotiations.
It's believed Bruce is hopeful of concluding a deal for the 25-year-old as he looks to bolster his forward line.
Zamalek value Zaki at £6m, with Latics having an opening offer of £4.2m turned down.
