Wigan girls who left St Joseph's School back in the 1950s were in for the surprise of their life when they held a class reunion.
The girls are now ladies approaching 70, and on arrival at the restaurant for lunch and a chat about old times their former teacher was there to see things didn't get out of hand.

Two dozen pupils were all over the moon to see 85-year-old Miss Gertrude Hilton, who had taught at the now demolished St Joseph's for years.

And another surprise guest was former pupil Helen Kelly who flew in from County Mayo in Ireland to meet her old school pals. Reunion organiser Barbara Davis said: "Most of us left St Joseph's in 1953 or 1954 ... that's quite a long time ago.

"But I'm delighted to see so many here and all the girls were so pleased our former teacher was here.
"She was a true treasure and taught us how to behave and act like ladies. We have a lot to thank Miss Hilton for."

Helen Kelly, a former lecturer in psychology at Salford University, said: "We were all proud to be pupils at St Joseph's. We learned about the good things in life, but also about how people lived in poverty. I have very happy memories of school and of Miss Hilton in particular, who made sure we were fitted out for life. She taught us manners, respect and loyalty in addition to the 3 Rs."

Sprightly Miss Hilton, who lives in Shevington said: "I remember every one of these girls and some I've not seen for half a century. Our school had a wonderful atmosphere. They were truly good days."

Wigan Girls High School will be holding a reunion on Friday, September 19 at the Quality Inn, Wigan. Miss Kate Fussell, consultant general surgeon is to be the guest speaker. For further details please telephone Pat Roscoe 01942 241069.
