WIGAN’S funniest milkman is offering an alternative “Mad Friday” this year.

Often associated with swelling pubs, bars and clubs, the last Friday before Christmas is usually one of the biggest nights out of the year.

But Carl “Chunk” Lawrence wanted to offer something different this year and is putting on a night of comedy for those who fancy a change. This time six months ago Carl, a milkman by trade, hadn’t even picked up a microphone.

But after being given a chance by Wigan comedian Jimmy O at the Laughs on the lane comedy night, his reputation rocketed.

He has since turned professional and is now represented by Jongleurs, the biggest comedy agency in the country.

The father-of-four has already put on two popular comedy nights at Newtown Working Men’s Club and is now hoping for a hat-trick.
“We wanted to do something a little different,” he said.

“Mad Friday has always been a big night in Wigan but I know a few who want something a little different and everyone loves laughing.

“Our last two nights have gone down brilliantly well, we have packed the place out so we’re hoping for another.

“We really want this to be our biggest and best yet.”

The night, on December 21, will see a number of top acts come to town. Brennan Reece will open the show before a middle trio of Carl, Sean Riley and Barry Meaden.

The headline act is Comedy Store and Frog and Bucket regular David Langley.

And Carl is urging Wigan folk to get down and bring their pals along too. He added: “We’re putting a special offer on for local businesses too who may want a different type of Christmas do.

“For £100, they can get a table of 12 reserved for them, with six bottles of premium white wine, party hats, fun dress up, glow in the dark treats and mince pies.

“Alternatively tickets are just £5. They should be £7 but we are really lucky to have our sponsors ratemyretail.co.uk onboard again and they have agreed to subsidise the tickets so they are cheaper.”
