A WIGAN couple will be completing the Great North Run for two very different causes.
Michael and Rachel Richardson, of Wadsworth Drive, Springfield, will take on the 13.1 mile race through the North East on September 18. And it won’t be just one charity reaping the rewards.
Michael will be running for Age UK while Rachel will be raising money for Guide Dogs.
Michael said: “I’ve been a social worker for 20 years. Age UK need as much money as they can get now, especially if there are to be further cuts.
“I really want to assist older people as much as I can and this charity does many things for people.”
Michael now works with an Older People Team based at Leigh Infirmary. Animal-loving wife Rachel is hoping to raise money for the Guide Dog charity.
She said: “I really like animals so I thought ‘why not?’ I did it two years ago and recorded a time of two hours and 10 minutes so I’d like to beat that.”
But Rachel admits that she is fully expecting her husband to cross the line first.
She joked: “I wish I could beat him! No, he’ll get the better time. He’s one of those who can not run for ages and then just do 10 miles, it’s so annoying!
“Hopefully we’ll both raise a lot for two very good causes!”
Both Michael and Rachel have set up web pages for people to donate to online.
