CHEERLEADERS from a Wigan primary school came first in a Wigan cheer competition for the second year running.
RL Hughes Hurricanes, based in Ashton, gained the top prize for their pom dance in the junior section.
It’s only the second time the team, which is made up of Year Four and Year Five girls, has entered the competition and they had just five weeks to perfect the choreography.
But the schoolchildren and coach Cary Riding were delighted with the end result.
Cary said: “I think the team were fantastic and it’s wonderful that they won in their section as they only had five weeks to prepare. It was a brilliant day for everybody and they really acted like a team.”
The routine was based on Disney’s Wizards of Waverley Place and they danced to two songs by Selena Gomez.
The choreography was based on being a wizard and magic was the theme behind the costumes.
They performed their pom dance which does not require stunts once for the judges and then performed a school cheer.
Cary added: “Cheerleading is a team sport anyway, everybody is encouraged to support each other even if they are not from your group.”
Cary also teaches school pupils from Cansfield High School, who came third in the secondary section. For more information contact Cary on 07905 482466.
