The annual guide, released by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and on sale today, offers an insight into pubs, bars and clubs. It highlights venues selected by its members "as places to savour good beers from small breweries as well as cask-conditioned lagers and world beers and some pubs are highlighted for serving real ciders too". Here are 19 of the Wigan borough bars that feature in the 50th edition of the guide and what CAMRA said about each of them.
17. The Standish Unity Club
The Standish Unity Club, Cross Street, WN6 0HQ.
CAMRA said: "In the centre of Standish but tucked away so a little tricky to find, this popular club offers five real ales including one dark beer, often Titanic Plum Porter. The club is divided in two – a large function room and a bar area including the games room, plus a quieter drinking area." Photo: Michelle Adamson
18. Albion Ale House
Albion Ale House, 12 High Street, WN6 0HL.
CAMRA said: "The first micropub in Standish, located in a former shop on the High Street. Now well established, it has a loyal clientele and has won local CAMRA Community Pub of the Year. The beer garden was extended during lockdown. At least five cask ales are on offer, sometimes more, including one dark beer." Photo: MA
19. The Hoot
The Hoot Hoot, 34A High Street, WN6 0HL.
CAMRA said: "This modern cafe ́-bar with interesting accent lighting has a tiled slate floor, wood-burning stove and modest silent TVs. Novelty owls feature in the large single-room bar area. Varying local real ales and ciders are available alongside speciality coffees and prosecco, attracting all age groups. Light bites and sandwiches are also served." Photo: MA
