A WIGAN bakery has delighted cycling champ Bradley Wiggins by creating special gingerbread and shortbread in his honour.
Galloways’ new stock proudly portray “Wiggo” and his now famous sideburns as well as the gold medal he recently picked up at the Olympics.
And so proud was Brad that his local bakery had created the tribute, he tweeted his appreciation and a picture of the gingerbread.
Initially the firm, who are based on Gidlow Lane, supplied the cakes through their Eccleston branch, where Bradley lives with Shevington-born wife Cath.
Galloways was asked to create a special cake when TV companies arrived in town following his remarkable success and was going for gold in the 44km Olympic time trial.
And as customers came pouring in, they decided to give them the taste of victory by creating the two new products.
Bradley is now favourite for the Sports Personality of the Year award after his superb Tour de France and Olympic victories.
Senior area manager at Galloways, Darren Quigley, says demand has been high for the cakes.
He said: “When he was going for gold we baked a big cake and created the medals and when he won it, we made the one with his face on.
“They have been selling fantastically well to be honest.
“People saw it on the news and have come from miles around to buy them.
“We’ve had customers from Liverpool and other places.
“Initially they were selling superbly in the Eccleston area but as soon as he started talking about his love for Wigan, we’ve started selling them here too and again we’ve been selling loads.
“We’ve got plenty more on order too so his popularity isn’t wearing off at all!”
Wiggins has been revelling in his superb double victory this week.
The music fan has met some of his heroes such as Paul Weller and Ian Brown since his win as well as receiving a special congratulations message from the Queen.
