A TEAM of car audio and security engineers will swap four wheels and an engine for two wheels and pedal power when they get on their bikes for charity this weekend.
The group of three from K&M Acoustics, on Seven Stars Road just off Wallgate, will join thousands of other cyclists taking on the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride to raise money for The Christie hospital.
Director Mike Winstanley, company secretary Keith Stockley and installer Anthony Hart will set off from Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground on a 60-mile run to the famous promenade at Blackpool via Preston on Sunday.
Although the riders will pass through Wigan, Keith says the sight of home surroundings may not be a particularly pleasant one.
He said: “The route comes in through Haigh Hall and goes out through the Plantation Gates, which is actually a severe hill, before taking the long drag up through Standish. Wigan Road may seem quite flat in a car, but on a bike it is a long, long run uphill.
“It’s probably one of the toughest parts of the course, although the final stretch along the sea front from Lytham is usually quite difficult because of the strong wind blowing against you.”
Keen cyclist Keith was responsible for getting the team, which may also be joined by a couple of customers and friends on the day, into the ride as he did the event for Wigan and Leigh Hospice last year.
The K&M team, who fit cars with system including in-car entertainment, alarms and hands-free devices, are no strangers to fund-raising, having taken part in Movember last year.
He decided to raise money for The Christie after his father-in-law Alan Jones was treated there for cancer.
He said: “He was very ill for a while but he’s now fighting fit in his late 60s, fully cured. You can’t ask a hospital for more than that. “It took a bit of persuasion to get the others to do it, but Mike has done the ride a long time ago and Anthony has talked about doing it before, so they agreed it seemed like a good idea.
“I think the weather forecast is quite bad for Sunday, but come rain, wind or snow we will do it because it’s for a good cause.”
Anyone who wants to sponsor the K&M team can do so by visiting the store and filling in a sponsor sheet.
