BABIES and cakes were on everyone’s minds at Wigan Infirmary as the hospital celebrated the work of midwives.

Anne Clayton, a member of the newly-reformed Wigan Branch of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), made celebration cakes with icing babies on top as part of International Day of the Midwife and to raise funds for the RCM.

The day also marked the beginning of new relations with the RCM.

Midwife Linda Jones, who is now the secretary of RCM, said: “For some years the midwives of Wigan have had no in-house representation within the RCM.

“I met with area representative Lesley Gaskell, with a view to resurrecting the Wigan branch.

“The new branch will provide local union representation, support with professional development and training, as well as camaraderie within the midwifery circles.”
