A WIGAN schoolgirl has sung her way to the next stages of a national talent competition.
Olivia Garcia, of Orrell, won over judges with her rendition of Whitney Houston classic I Have Nothing to smash through the regional final of Open Mic UK to gain a place in the area final on November 16 at Royal College of Music in Manchester.
The 14-year-old, who attends Up Holland High School said: “I sang my own version of Imagine by John Lennon at the audition and I got good feedback but was told I needed to work on my stage presence. At the regional final, I got good comments, as I worked on that but now I need to connect with my audience more.
“I felt really excited after getting through the regional final and can’t wait for my next performance. I am going to practice more, as I will be doing XO by Beyonce.
“I have to put my own twist on it, which is exciting. I am really proud of myself for getting through to the area finals. I am really happy to be in the area finals and I would love to win.
“I entered Open Mic as it seemed a good competition and a lot of X Factor contestants have been on it and have been quite successful. It is my aim to be on the X-Factor.”
Open Mic UK 2014, organised by Future Music, is the biggest search for unsigned talent in the UK, looking for the UK’s best singers, singer-songwriters, rappers and vocalists of all genres performing either covers or their own original material.
