WORLD class acts converge on Wigan this week for the town’s premier music event.

The 28th annual Wigan International Jazz Festival starts on Thursday and is four days packed with talent including Igor Butman Big Band and the Dutch College Swing Band.

Sponsored by Manchester Airport and local businesses, the festival takes place at Robin Park Indoor Sports Centre, with free events in the town centre and Mesnes Park.

Festival director Ian Darrington said: “I’m delighted the festival is almost here and am looking forward to welcoming all this year’s acts to Wigan.

“There really is something for everyone and I’d encourage people to come along to see some of the talented bands and individuals we have attracted to the town for this music extravaganza.”

Other star acts include the Darius Brubeck Quartet with special guest Brandon Allen, the Skelton Skinner All Star Big Band and Give a Little Love Jazz Orchestra.

Budding musicians can also take advantage of improvisation and vocal workshops with Linley Hamilton & His Trio, members of Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra and Dana Masters.

The Big Gig, takes place on Sunday in Mesnes Park from noon to 4pm, and offers an afternoon of live entertainment.
