A WIGAN shop owner will cycle more than 20 miles for a charity which looked after his cancer-stricken dad.
John Robinson, 32, is to cycle from Southport to Mace convenience store, in Mesnes Road, Wigan, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The charity cared for both his dad, Richard Barrow, who died two years ago, aged 58, and his nan, Pat Abella, who died in 2003, aged 71.
John, a father-of-two, said: “I will be joined by a few other riders who will also raise money for the charity.
“I chose Macmillan because I lost my dad and my nan through cancer and the charity did a lot of work looking after them the whole way through.
“They helped us with things we had not even thought about - they were amazing. They helped my mum financially with things she was entitled to and even after my dad and nan had passed away they were still there to support us, helping to plan the funeral.
“So I just want to say thank you and give something back.”
John, who lives in Skelmersdale, is no stranger to fund-raising as he has done cycling challenges in previous years.
He added: “Last time there was only three of us and we raised £1,000, so I am hoping to beat that figure.
“For this event, I originally chose to ride from Blackpool South Shore to my shop, but it was agreed that maybe 30 miles was too far, so I changed it to Southport, which was more accessible for my fellow riders.
“I just want to raise as much money as possible for Macmillan, who has been amazing.”
Katie Powell, fund-raising manager for Macmillan, said: “We are absolutely thrilled John has chosen to support Macmillan in this way.
“He has worked really hard with fund-raising and all the money raised will go to help people who are going through a cancer journey in a practical way.”
If anyone would like to sponsor John, or even join him in the cycle challenge, which will take place on Saturday, December 3, can pick up a sponsor form from Mace, 81 Mesnes Road, Wigan.
