GREATER Manchester’s first citizens descended onto Wigan in celebration of Civic Day.

The Mayor of Wigan, Coun Joy Birch, was joined by top dignitaries from the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities in a tour around the region.

And as she nears the end of a busy term of office, Mayor Birch was keen to show off the borough to her distinguished guests.

As she shared stories of her year in office, which involved fund-raising and being part of many high profile events, the dignitaries toured the new Wigan Life Centre, Wigan Parish Church and stopped off for some fine ale at Allgates Brewery.

They also chatted to locals, and said they gained a positive and friendly impression of the town.

Civic Day is a national celebration of civic pride.

Civic Day is described being the one when communities across the country say “we care about where we live.”

The role of the Mayor, which is non-political, is to fly the flag for the borough.

Each year, the First Citizen undertakes several hundred official functions, visits and engagements which promote the area to visitors.
