GENEROUS Wiganers are being encouraged to don their running shoes and go the extra mile for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The charity is calling on its supporters to help its work by signing up for the Great North Run, the world’s most popular half marathon.

The Marie Curie Daffodil Team will be pounding the tarmac of the North East to complete the 13.1 mile course from Gateshead to South Shields alongside thousands of other fund-raisers on September 16, and the charity hope as many runners as possible will join them.

The Wigan Evening Post will also be supporting the runners as part of our Safe Hands Appeal, which aims to raise thousands of pounds to help Marie Curie’s dedicated nurses look after cancer sufferers and terminally-ill patients in their own homes across the borough.

Online registration is now open for the Great North Run, but places are likely to fill up quickly as the run is heavily over-subscribed each year.

Runners in the Marie Curie Daffodil Team will receive a special Nike-designed running vest, support and advice to help get sponsors signed up and encouragement on the big day from Marie Curie’s colourful cheer stations which will line the route. Athletes will also get an after-race sports massage.

Marie Curie events fund-raiser Sam James said: “If you fancy joining tens of thousands of people pouring through the streets of Tyneside in this iconic half marathon, then the Bupa Great North Run is for you.

“It is an incredibly special event to take part in, particularly as you’ll also be helping our Marie Curie Nurses to give more free nursing care to terminally ill people in the comfort of their own homes.”

To join the Daffodil Team, register at www.greatrun.org/events and select Marie Curie Cancer Care as your charity, or contact the charity on confirmation of a place on 0870 034 0040, email events@mariecurie.org.uk or visiting www.mariecurie.org.uk/running
