OVERDONE it during the festive season? Help is at hand for men who want to do something about their health and weight in 2012.

NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan has announced a pioneering men’s weight management service, part of the already successful Lose Weight Feel Great programme.

The new service has been developed in response to many men feeling that traditional weight loss just isn’t for them. It encourages men to “Trim Down, Shape Up” and take on a different approach to their health.

Similar to the successful Lose Weight Feel Great initiative it will provide a range of weight loss services which combines the three important elements we all need for successful weight management, healthy eating, fitness and motivational support.

The service is aimed at men aged 18 and over with a BMI of 25-40 and although it is aimed at males, women are also welcome to attend the sessions.

The service is one of the first of its kind in the country and has been designed with men in mind, encouraging them to attend the free 12-week programme followed by ongoing support for up to 12 months.

The service is being offered to residents and people working in local organisations across Ashton, Leigh and Wigan.

Hindley waste depot has already signed up for the initiative and will be encouraging male staff to get healthy and stay that way by signing up to the service.

Those signing up for the service will be able to attend group sessions at a variety of locations across the borough at a range of times including after work.

Groups are designed to help reach health and fitness goals and achieve a healthier lifestyle for good.

Jane Pilkington, Assistant Director of Health Improvement at NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan (above) said: “After thorough research in to the requirements for men wanting to lose weight, we identified a real need to develop a more unique service targeted at men which will help more men to achieve their health and fitness goals.

“By encouraging men to reduce what they weigh, we hope that they will get the whole family on board so they can work together to protect their own health and the health of future families.”

The Men’s Weight Management Service is quick and easy to join and is open to anyone living in Ashton, Leigh and Wigan with a BMI of 25-40.

Interested people can enrol by visiting www.LWFG.co.uk or by calling 01942 496496 to speak to a trained health advisor.

The sessions will take place across Ashton, Leigh and Wigan. Venues include Wigan Soccer Dome; Leigh Sports Village; St Peter’s Pavilion; St Edmund Arrowsmith High School
