Tyler's on top of the world

A Wigan schoolgirl has cheered and danced her way to a national title at her first attempt.

Talented 10-year-old cheerleader Tyler Andrews Halliwell scooped first place in a solo event at the recent European Empress Classic cheerleading competition, held at Blackpool's Winter Gardens, in what was her debut solo performance.

And the sporty Aspull Primary School pupil, from Standish, then went on to help her team, the Lancashire Twisters, to first place in the squad event.

Her proud dad Jon Andrews said: "To see Tyler perform in front of so many people was a real thrill. She showed no signs of nerves and obviously loved every minute of her time on the floor.

"Tyler's performance made me so proud and her solo performance was followed by a rapturous round of applause from the watching crowd. To then find out she'd won the solo event made the day even better.

"It was a fantastic achievement by a fantastic young girl who loves sport – well done Tyler."

Tyler took up cheerleading around four-years-ago after a short spell trying her hand at gymnastics and competes in events with the Twisters' squad throughout the year.

In her years with the club she has taken part in competitions across the country and enjoys the different elements that cheerleading has to offer.

She said: "I love cheerleading because it is like dance and gymnastics rolled into one – it keeps me active and it's lots of fun."

Tyler spent six weeks training for her solo performance having come up with a routine with her team coaches, and was ecstatic about winning the solo prize. She was also thrilled to be part of the first-prize winning squad.

Described by her dad as a general all-rounder, the youngster is also a keen golfer and dancer and competes in cross country events for her school.

At the last meeting she finished second in a huge field.
