Local church to host two episodes of hit show Songs of Praise

BRITAIN’S most-watched religious programme is returning to Wigan for not one but two shows.

Lusty singers are being recruited and rehearsals will soon be starting for the recording of a pair of Songs of Praise episodes to be broadcast four months apart.

And a group of 10 young singers is set to play a starring role. The Vox Aurum Youth Choir has been asked by the BBC to perform a specially-arranged Advent carol called Star Child, Earth Child.

The services are to be recorded at St Oswald’s RC Church in Ashton and members of other churches and choirs are being invited to join the combined choir (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) or bolster the congregational singing.

The rehearsal for the combined choir will take place at St Oswald’s between 6.30pm and 9.30pm on October 9 and the television recordings will be Thursday October 17 (7pm to 10pm) and Friday October 18.

The latter recording will be of an Advent service to be broadcast on BBC1 on December 15. The first will only be screened on April 6 next year.
