WIGAN milkie Carl Lawrence is through to the grand final of the prestigious Comic Idol competition, hosted by legendary comedy club Jongleurs.
The national contest has been going since March with the “boot camp” stage taking place last week.
Carl, of Sinclair Place, Worsley Hall, flew through the opening stages against comedians who have been in the game for years, despite him only being a rookie.
A milkman by trade, Carl took a spot at the Laughs on the Lane at the Bellingham Hotel earlier this year in what was his first ever gig.
Since then, he has gone on to compete in – and win – various competitions, including three Frog and Bucket events.
Buoyed by his success, the talented 28-year-old decided to enter the Comic Idol competition against 200 other comedians.
And last week, he was told he was through to the Grand Final which takes place this Monday in London.
He said: “I was absolutely astounded when I was told I got through.
“The prize is a professional contract which would be unbelievable considering I only had my first gig in February!
“It’s gone great recently and I’ve had some really good gigs. I’ve always wanted this to be a profession for me but I’ve got to be honest and say I didn’t expect to get the chance this soon.
“Kays dairy, my employers, have been great with me and have backed me all the way. I also owe a lot of thanks to Jimmy O’Neill”.
The acts will be assessed by an esteemed panel of judges, consisting of Jongleurs founder and owner Maria Kempinska, comedy producer Jerry Palmer and famed Allo! Allo! actress Vicki Michelle.
