WIGAN pupils struck an artistic blow against intolerance.

Children at Haigh St David’s made a striking mosaic out of tiny tiles which will eventually become a section of a community art display.

Working under the auspices of Haigh Hall artist in residence Karen Buckels, the finished piece shows a black child on a white background and a white child on a black background, united around a scarlet heart of friendship and understanding.

Earlier in the day Karen had visited the village’s other schools, Our Lady’s RC plus Aspull Church, to help them complete their own mosaics, constructed in the time honoured fashion using tiny ceramic tiles.

Head of Haigh St David’s Primary School, Mrs Catherine Boulton, said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed meeting Karen and her team and completing the mosaic and love the thought of their work eventually being put on display.”
