Laura and her magic flute

WIGAN welcomes festival performer Laura J Martin on Saturday.

The creative soul is venturing down to the Tudor House Hotel to launch her new album, The Hangman Tree.

The multi-instrumentalist has been compared to a young Kate Bush, due to her vocal style and obvious creative output, and according to Baz Wilkinson of Imploding Inevitable, there is no better place to be tonight than listening to Laura’s folky style.

He said: “It happened Laura was launching her album, and we were looking for a special artist to promote to coincide with our sixth birthday.

“Originally, Laura was going to be playing in October, but the album was delayed and the Gods seemed to say, ‘Thou shalt book Laura J Martin’, it just seemed right.

“She will go down well in Wigan without a doubt, all manner of people have been shouting about her.

“With Imploding, we are trying to appeal to an audience who grew up with Pentangle, Fairport Convention and lived the best side of the 60s.

“We want to appeal to people that appreciate real creativity, and that aren’t part of a trend.

“And with that, Laura will cross all those kind of boundaries and whilst being totally new, she takes on board all these weird influences, such as Japanese folklore, and mixes them in with everyday observations.

“She’ll appeal to people who have a discerning taste, while also appealing to folk who love to see something original and creative unfold in front of them.”

Making Saturday even more unmissable is the attendance of Liverpudlian group, Emily and The Faves.

Emily, of Stealing Sheep, joins Lancaster’s Jo Gillot for a session of psychedelia and eccentricity.

The night will start with Wigan’s Martin Dutton spinning some vinyl from 8pm, with the first band on from 9pm. As always, entry is free.
