STAR soprano Laurie Ashworth didn’t have to think twice about what her favourite place is.
But it isn’t the Royal Albert Hall or any other top classical music venue - rather the home of her beloved Wigan Athletic.
The award-winning singer from Appley Bridge says that some of her most treasured memories are from Springfield Park and the DW Stadium.
Her dad Mike has been club doctor since before Laurie was born and he began taking her to matches regularly from the age of 10 onwards. Now she is well known for singing to the crowds before the start of home games.
She said: “We used to be behind the dug-out at Springfield Park and I have vivid memories of standing with dad and the late Maurice Reid (the other club doctor), both getting very animated with the refs. I remember Kevin Lynch, an older referee, particularly coming in for a lot of stick!
“Winning promotion to the Premier League was another great moment and I try to get to as many games, home and away, as I can. The only problem is that a lot of concerts are on Saturdays too.”
