A WIGAN fitness team is showing its aversion to an internet craze by turning it around into something positive.

Members of Trim Down Shape Up (TDSU), a free men-only fitness programme funded by Wigan Council, are currently running exercise elections – ExNomination – to motivate people to get active.

Craig Hamilton, project manager, said: “We have been running the ExNomination as a healthy way to enjoy the social media trend of NekNomination.

“We decided to replace alcohol consumption with a fitness aspect to engage our men in some light-hearted banter and a short fitness exercise.

“TDSU participants have taken to the trend and we have received 17 videos – and counting – so far, with clips including (but not limited to) original and modified press-ups, sit-ups, squats, bench presses and tricep dips.

“As the word spreads about this trend, we expect many more videos to be posted on their Facebook page.

“One participant has taken this activity a step further by filming a three-mile bike ride through Wigan, thus highlighting the positive effect this can have on their clients.”

TDSU is a programme of 12 weekly sessions, aimed at helping men take charge of their health and become fitter, leaner and shift excess weight.

The sessions include a trained fitness coach offering nutritional advice and a physical activity session.

There is a different nutritional topic discussed each week and the activity session can include anything from circuits or boxercise to team games like dodgeball, touch rugby or football.

Sessions are run at different times, days and venues all over the borough with venues that include the Wigan Soccerdome, Leigh Sports Village and Wigan Warriors Central Park centre of excellence.

This programme can kick start their physical activity levels and this combined with advice on healthy eating can make a major difference to their health and weight.

For further information or to sign up to the programme men can call 01942 496496 or text ‘FIT’ and their ‘Name’ to 60777 or sign up on line www.lwfg.co.uk/men.
