WIGAN fans have the chance to purchase a piece of Central Park history... almost 12 years after the ground closed its doors.
A piece of carpet from the old VIP room at the ground has been placed on eBay, more than three years after it was bought on the internet site.
Andrew and Tina Dawber from Standish purchased the piece of carpet in 2007 for Tina’s father Jack as a birthday present, spending over £200.
Jack was a huge Wigan RL fan and good friends with players Gareth Hock and the late Terry Newton, with whom he used to drink with in the Eckersley Arms pub on Poolstock Lane.
However, Jack has since passed away, meaning the carpet is now back in the hands of Andrew and Tina and they are looking for a new home for the historic piece.
Andrew said: “It’s in pristine condition and looks great.
“We wanted to keep it but the Saints fan in our house said the only way she would use it is as a door mat!
“So we’ve decided to return to eBay in the search of a true Wigan fan to take it in.”
The 31”x27” hessian-backed carpet is made from thick-weave maroon pile and it is embroidered with the club’s coat of arms and the words Wigan Rugby League.
According to former Wigan player, physio and kitman Keith Mills, the carpet was once laid in the VIP lounge in Central Park.
It was then passed on to a lady in recognition of her services to the club when the stadium shut down.
It is believed to be among approximately a dozen in existence after the expensive boardroom carpet was salvaged from the ground before its demolition in 1999.
The carpet was cut into squares which found their way into the hands of collectors.
