WIGANERS wanting to stamp their seal of approval on a Team GB win at the Olympics this year will be able to thanks to the Royal Mail.
The postal service has announced that three Wigan post offices are to sell the new special Olympic stamps which will be used to celebrate a British victory.
The branches at Old Road and Bryn Street in Ashton and Wigan’s Wallgate will be selling the commemorative stamps within 24 hours of any Team GB member gaining a gold medal.
The move is a first for next-day stamps from Royal Mail and the branches will also be open on Sundays during the Olympic Games.
The Team GB Gold Medal stamps will be available to purchase individually at the standard 60p First Class price or in sets of six stamps for £3.60.
Royal Mail issued its first Olympic Games stamps in 1948, with four stamps bearing the Olympic rings.
The service revealed today that the three Wigan branches have all been specially chosen to sell the gold medal stamps to celebrate success at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
A stamp will be produced capturing an action image of each Team GB member or team that wins gold this summer.
For example, should Wigan’s own Jenny Meadows bring home gold then the very next day a stamp with her pictured in action will be issued.
Moya Greene, Royal Mail Group Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted to be issuing these very special Gold Medal stamps to recognise world-beating athletic achievement.
“This will be a first for Royal Mail and we are proud we will be able to play our part in celebrating what we hope will be very many victories this summer.
“Now this momentous event is just around the corner, we are looking forward to showcasing the Team GB sporting heroes in this unique way.
“We will be printing millions of stamps to enable customers to join us in these celebrations of sporting success.
“We of course wish all members of Team GB the best of luck this summer.”
The stamps will also be available to purchase online via www.royalmail.com/goldmedalstamps.
