THERE were no wailing sirens or flashing lights - but there was plenty to see and do when Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service opened their station doors to the public.

Visitors enjoyed a close up and expert-guided look around one of the service’s very latest gleaming appliances ... as well as a more venerable fire engine exhibit built in the 1950s and on loan from the fire service museum.

There was also a live-action demonstration of the increasing danger to homes when arsonists deliberately set wheely bins blazing and push them up against house doors.

Children enjoyed the chance to done full fire service breathing aparatus and be escorted into a darkened room complex which fire fighters use to practise rescue drill.
